Skeletons in the Cupboard

Many societies, such as
China and Japan, revere their ancestors giving them an honoured place in
their homes and treating them to drink, music and entertainment. In the west, however, many of us tend to regard our ancestors
with a certain suspicion. ‘I
wouldn’t like to trace my ancestors’, I’m frequently told, ‘in
case I found out something I didn’t like.
Goodness knows what skeletons are in our cupboard’.
It does little good to point out that the expression ‘Skeleton in
the cupboard’, popularised by novelist William Makepeace Thackeray,
refers to the fact that every family has at least one ancestor which the
family conspires to keep to itself.

So, no family is without its’
guilty secret. And although
few of us expect our family to trace their descent through a long line of
saints, we like to think that, if the occasion arose, we could invite any of our
ancestors round to tea without suffering any pangs of embarrassment.
Before they start unearthing ancestors many people would like to be
reassured that they are, at the very least, respectable.

This seems a great pity.
Speaking for myself I think having a notorious ancestor makes the
family history a lot more exciting. So
if you have, why not share your stories with us!
If you have an ancestor who was a convict or rogue, a witch or
